Does NACHI Certification Really Matter?

You might expect that if a state requires a certification for a position in an industry, it’s required for a good reason. Generally, that holds true. You might think that the opposite would then hold true, that the lack of a requirement means that it’s not a big deal, but that isn’t necessarily the case. InterNACHI is one of the certifications that can be earned by a home inspector, and it’s one worth giving attention to.

What Is NACHI Certification?

InterNACHI, or the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors is the world’s largest association of residential and commercial property inspectors. InterNACHI (sometimes referred to as simply NACHI) offers training and education that allows its inspectors to offer top quality inspections to their clients. The certification process covers ethics, standards of practice, and an exam that you must pass.

What It Means for Us

For home inspectors, becoming NACHI certified is just the beginning. The certification isn’t just a one-and-done sort of thing. It has to be maintained. That requires a decent amount of ongoing education and training. Within a year of being certified, a NACHI certified inspector must complete no fewer than 11 different courses. Other requirements to maintain certification include adhering to the standards of practice, following the code of ethics, completing 24 hours per year of continuing education, and maintaining an online continuing education log. Every three years the inspector must again take and pass the online inspector examination with a score of 80 or better.

What It Means for You

When you hire a home inspector who is NACHI certified, you can trust that they’ve really put in the work to know their business. You can trust that they’re dedicated to their craft, and that they’re up to date with industry changes. Your home is one of the most important purchases you’ll ever make. It only makes sense to trust someone who has put in the time and work to really know what they’re doing to handle the inspection.

At the end of the day, the choice of who to hire to inspect your home is up to you. If you really want to get a quality home inspection and feel confident that you can trust your inspector, it’s a good idea to look for one that holds themselves to a higher standard, especially if your state doesn’t. Choose inspectors like those from BTS Home Inspections that have gone the extra mile by becoming NACHI certified.
