How Can I Tell If My Home Isn’t Insulated Well?

With the heat of summer very much here, many of us are seeking refuge from record-pushing temperatures in the air conditioned spaces of our homes. Sure, your HVAC system may be MVP here as it works to keep your home refreshingly cool. It’s not the only factor at play though. Your home’s insulation has its role to play as well. If your home isn’t well insulated, it will be more difficult to keep things pleasant. So how can you tell if your home isn’t insulated well?

Touch Tests

Insulation isn’t just helpful during the summer heat. It also helps keep your home cozy warm during the winter. If you aren’t sure if your insulation is doing its job, a touch test may be able to confirm your suspicions. The internal walls, ceilings, and floors of your home should be warm and dry to the touch if your home is properly insulated. If that isn’t the case, you may want to do further testing to determine where the problem lies.

Inconsistencies

Inconsistencies are another sign that your home’s insulation may be lacking. It’s normal for energy bills to go up when it’s particularly hot or cold outside, but a lack of good insulation will exacerbate the cost. Beyond that, if you notice that some rooms in your home are a markedly different temperature from others, your insulation may be to blame. There are plenty of other reasons why that might happen, but your insulation definitely could be one of them.

Infrared Thermal Scan

The tricky thing about figuring out how well your home is insulated is that a lot of the insulation is in places that aren’t readily visible. Even areas like your attic may be difficult to access, meaning that determining how well it’s insulated is tricky at best. An infrared thermal scan can identify warm and cold spots within your home, making it far easier to identify which areas are well insulated and which ones aren’t.

The better your home is insulated, the easier it will be to keep it at your desired temperature. There are some things you can pay attention to in order to get a feel for whether or not your home is properly insulated. An infrared thermal scan is a better, more accurate option though. Make sure your home’s insulation is up to par so you can enjoy refreshing indoor temperatures all summer long.
